What was Omegle?
Omegle was a free website that paired random strangers for anonymous one-on-one chats. It launched in 2009 as a text chat and added video chat in 2010, which quickly became its best-known feature.
Its slogan was “Talk to strangers!”, and that was the whole idea: no accounts, no profiles, just a click to be connected with someone anywhere in the world. That simplicity made it one of the most famous chat sites on the internet, and a staple of countless videos and livestreams.
Why did Omegle shut down?
Omegle shut down because its founder decided running it was no longer sustainable. In a statement posted on the homepage on November 8, 2023, Leif K-Brooks wrote that the stress and expense of operating the site — and of the constant fight against people misusing it — had become too much, financially and psychologically.
The closure followed years of criticism of the platform and legal action related to misuse. The statement described Omegle's moderation efforts, but concluded that keeping the site going was no longer possible.

Is Omegle coming back?
No. The shutdown was announced as permanent, and there has been no indication that the original Omegle will return. Visiting omegle.com shows the founder's farewell statement instead of a chat.
Are “Omegle” sites today the real Omegle?
No — any site using the Omegle name today is a different website. After the shutdown, many sites appeared with names and designs that imitate Omegle to attract people searching for it.
- Check who runs it. A trustworthy site has clear terms, a privacy policy and contact details.
- Check who it is for. Good sites say clearly which audience they serve and enforce an age limit.
- Be wary of downloads. You never need to install unknown software to video chat in a browser.
- Protect your privacy. Never share personal or financial details with strangers.
