What is random video chat?
Random video chat is an online service that connects you with a stranger for a live video conversation. Instead of choosing a specific person from a list of profiles, you are paired with someone who is also looking to chat at that moment. If the conversation is not for you, you leave and meet someone else.
The format became popular around 2009–2010 with sites like Chatroulette and Omegle. Today there are many services with different audiences and features; see our guide to the best Omegle alternatives.
How does matching work?
Matching is the “random” part. When you start a chat, the service adds you to a pool of people who are currently waiting. As soon as another person is available, the two of you are paired.
| Approach | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pure random | You are paired with whoever is available next | Maximum surprise, least control |
| Filters | You choose criteria such as gender or country | More control, often a paid feature |
| Interest matching | You list topics and are paired with people who share them | Easier openers, smaller pool |
How does the video connection work?
Most random video chat in the browser runs on WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication), an open standard built into modern browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. It lets two devices send live video and audio to each other with very little delay.
- Signalling: the service’s server introduces the two devices so they can find each other.
- Connecting: the devices try to connect as directly as possible. If a direct route is blocked by a firewall or router, the stream is relayed through a server.
- Streaming: video and audio are compressed, encrypted and sent continuously in both directions. WebRTC encrypts media streams by default.
Because this is built into the browser, there is nothing extra to install — which is why many services, JerkCall included, work without an app.
Why do video chat sites ask for camera access?
Browsers protect your privacy by blocking every website from your camera and microphone by default. The first time a site wants to use them, the browser asks you to allow or block access.
- Camera and microphone access only works on secure HTTPS pages.
- Permission is given per website, and you can change it at any time in your browser’s site settings.
- Most browsers show an indicator, such as a camera icon or a coloured dot, while your camera is in use.

What affects video chat quality?
Most problems with frozen video or bad audio come down to four things:
- Connection: a stable upload speed matters as much as download speed. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or switch to a strong 4G/5G signal.
- Lighting: cameras struggle in the dark, which makes video grainy. Face a window or lamp.
- Other apps: close apps and tabs that use your camera, microphone or a lot of bandwidth.
- Browser: keep your browser updated for the best WebRTC support.
How does it work on JerkCall?
On JerkCall the whole process takes a few seconds. You open the site, choose one of the two live video chat options, allow your camera and microphone, and start talking. Some chat options connect you through partner video chat services.
JerkCall is strictly for adults aged 18 and over, works in modern mobile and desktop browsers, and lets you leave any conversation at any moment.
